Children travelling in hip spica cast or brace

Supporting children travelling in hip spica or brace

We know from talking with and helping parents whose children are undergoing surgery for hip dysplasia how overwhelming and stressful this experience can be.

One of the many challenges families face during this time is getting their child home safely from the hospital.

Many children in a hip spica cast or brace can't sit comfortably - or safely - in their usual car seat. This can make travel planning stressful, especially after surgery. Having a suitable car seat that accommodates your child’s cast/brace is essential so that you can all travel home safely together.

We've created a list of FAQs below to help guide you as you plan for your child’s surgery and recovery. These are based on real questions and experiences shared by parents like you.

Family story: Hudson’s Journey

Sammy and Steven, parents to beautiful nine-month-old Hudson, shared their experience with us after his surgery for hip dysplasia. They struggled to find a car seat that would safely fit Hudson’s spica cast — and they found very little support available.

Their story highlighted a real gap in help for families like theirs, and it inspired us at MACA to take action.

Support

At MACA, we’re working hard to make sure no family has to go through what Hudson’s family did. Here’s how we're supporting allied health professionals and families across Australia.
