Children needing postural support

Supporting children's postural needs

Some children and young people with physical conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spina bifida may need extra support to help them sit upright and stay comfortable and safe while travelling. They might have difficulty holding their head or body upright, or they may move in ways that make it harder for them to sit safely and comfortably during a journey.

The good news is that there are supports and vehicle restraints available that can help your child to travel more comfortably and securely.

Family story: Jerome's journey

Jerome has cerebral palsy, and car journeys were becoming more challenging as he needed extra support to stay comfortable and safe.

His mother, Chris, shares how finding the right car seat made all the difference - giving Jerome the support he needed and making travel much easier for the whole family.

Support for families

If your child isn’t getting the right support from their current car seat or vehicle restraint, talk to your allied health professional (occupational therapist or physiotherapist) as soon as possible.

They can help find a solution that keeps your child safe and comfortable while travelling on our roads.

If you don’t already have an allied health professional, you can find a MACA-trained professional through our Lookup list.
