Queensland

In Queensland, specific requirements apply to medical exemptions from seatbelt rules and challenging a fine.

Before travel
  • Ask a doctor to complete the Queensland seatbelt exemption certificate.
  • The certificate must state that the person cannot wear a seatbelt because of a medical condition or disability. It is valid for up to 12 months and can be used in all vehicles the person travels in.
  • Register it with Transport and Main Roads online, by email, by post or at a Transport and Motoring Service Centre.
  • Carry the certificate when travelling.
  • Renew the certificate before it expires.
If fined

Submit a camera-detected infringement enquiry by the deadline on the notice. Include the medical certificate and relevant supporting documents.

If there was no current certificate, Queensland may consider a signed doctor’s letter stating that the person should not have worn a seatbelt because of their condition or disability at the time of the offence.
